Apple / Eidg. Intellectual Property Institute
(Trademark Registration Procedure)
In a ruling dated 13 April 2016, the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (IPI) refused trademark registration to the mark Apple submitted for protection of its music app. It would be descriptive and there was a need to keep it free for the competition. With its decision of May 30, 2017, the Federal Administrative Court upheld this decision and definitely rejected Apple's application for registration (Apple decided not to appeal to the Federal Court).
